The Drifting Away Contributors metric identifies contributors who were previously active in an open-source project but have gradually reduced their engagement over time.
This chart is not affected by time filter changes, meaning the data is always displayed relative to today's date.
This chart is not impacted by time filter changes. That means the data will always show with respect to "today".
A contributor is considered to be "drifting away" if they meet the following conditions:
They have made at least five code contributions to the project in total.
At least one contribution was made in the last six months.
They have not contributed in the last three months.
Monitoring Drifting Away Contributors helps maintain an active and engaged contributor community. By identifying contributors who are becoming less active, project managers can:
Understand the reasons for disengagement.
Take proactive steps to re-engage them.
Strengthen the contributor retention strategy.
Project maintainers can leverage this metric to: ✅ Identify patterns—Are contributors leaving after a specific event, milestone, or challenge? ✅ Conduct outreach—Re-engage contributors with personalized messages, surveys, or recognition efforts. ✅ Improve contributor experience—Enhance documentation, streamline processes, or introduce mentorship programs. ✅ Prevent long-term disengagement—Detect early warning signs and take steps to retain key contributors.
